Evaluating the Potential of Augmented Reality Interfaces for Exploring Underwater Historical Sites

Underwater cultural heritage sites represent an attractive and exciting experience for diving tourists, even if often it is complicated them to understand the significance value of remains that are usually strongly damaged covered by marine organisms. Thanks recent advancements in technologies overcome these problems, augmented reality nowadays possible such harsh conditions, opening new possibilities enhancing diver's experience. However, no user study has formally evaluated usefulness usability open sea underwater environments. This paper presents two novel solutions reality: a compact marker-based system small areas, complex acoustic large areas. Both were deployed at site ten divers experiments analyzing their perception remembrance, interests, For comparison, same was also performed with non-divers assessing on land.
